Excerpt from Catalogue of Paintings, Studio Appointments, Curios, Bric-a-Brac, an Unique Collection of Finger Rings Etc., Etc., Belonging to William Merritt Chase, N. A., Member of and Ex-President of the Society of American ArtistAlmost any other painter would need more of an introduction to the American public than William M. Chase. His pictures, his pupils, his active participation in every good work touching the development of native art, and the famous studio in Tenth Street, have made him well known, not only in New York but throughout the country, to everybody in any way interested in art and artists, and his reputation as a painter extends to Paris, London, and the other art centres of Europe. Ever since 1878, when he came to New York, he has been in the front rank of the valiant band of workers who have spread the fame of American painting and made its merit known to 1nanywho, before their advent knew it as little more than a name. Now after eighteen years of service with a long list of honors to his credit, and a generous meed of material success, he announces his intention of breaking camp and seeking a rest in a sojourn abroad. It is not a period of idle voyaging that he proposes for himself, but a rest to be gained by change of scene and change of work. Iwith a com pany of pupils he will go to the great gallery at Madrid, and afterward return to continue his career among us with a new studio and home in that picturesque quarter of our city called Stuyvesant Square.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
